How do I transfer a my data from one computer to another?

If you want to move your database from an old PC to a new one, or install ESPlanner on a laptop and transfer your data, here's a suggestion on how to do it if this kind of thing is a mystery to you.

First, you'll need a Flash drive, available from any office supply place. They are very inexpensive. Once you have that, Put the Flash drive in your desktop USB slot.

Open your windows explorer (directories and file view; One way is to click START then Documents)

PART 1. Find your ESPlanner database
Open ESPlanner
Click HELP-Customize
Look at the last text on this page, at the bottom, where is says
"The current setting is:"
A full directory and file will appear there
Using the mouse, click that text and select the path and file name
Mine says ( as an example)
c:\users\williams\my documents\my esplanner\espdatabase.mdb

Yours will be similar but likely is not identical

When it's selected (highlighted - make sure you get it all)
RIGHT click the mouse while pointed at the text and click COPY

Close ESPlanner If you don't close ESPlanner, you may not be able to copy the file.

PART 2. Copy the database to the flash drive
Now go to the Windows Explorer window previously opened.
Find the top of the panel where the directory name is listed Then use the mouse again, select that panel and RIGHT click again and choose PASTE.

The text from ESPlanner should appear

Using the backspace key, remove the filename from the text you have pasted, i.e. c:\users\williams\my documents\my esplanner\espdatabase.mdb would become
c:\users\williams\my documents\my esplanner\

Push ENTER (or return)

Find the database file ESPDatabase.mdb and drag a copy to your flash drive, which should appear in the panel on the left.

Close the Windows Explorer Window and remove the flash drive. (It's important to CLOSE the window first!!).

PART 3. Install the database on your new computer

Having removed it from your desktop computer, insert the flash drive into your laptop USB port.

Find the location of your database on the new computer:

If ESPlanner is not installed on your laptop, install it. Pay close attention to the directory your database file is to be stored in. Repeat the steps in Part 1 if you don't know the location of the database file.

Make sure ESPlanner is NOT running on your new PC before proceeding.

Once you have the file ESPdatabase.mdb located from your FLASH Drive, RIGHT click the database file on your LAPTOP and choose rename. Rename the file "ESPdatabase-old.mdb". Do not delete it yet.

Drag the ESPdatabase file on your flash drive from there and to the location where the database file is being stored on the laptop. (Likely very similar to what you had before). Replace the new ESPDatabase.mdb file with your saved one.

PART 4. TEST

On your new computer, start ESPlanner. The desktop icon that is installed by default tells ESPlanner to open the database file in the directory you have specified when you installed ESPlanner. If it doesn't work, (for example, you don't see the data from the other computer or you get an error) use the steps in Part 1 to find the file on your NEW computer and repeat the steps above.

Once you're finished and satisfied everything works, you may delete the "old" database file.
