How Does ESPlanner handle the Alternative Minimum Tax
The AMT is probably the most regressive of the taxes and Congress has continued to do nothing to fix the problem. To do so will require Congress to re-index the AMT bracket data.
This creates a problem for ESPlanner. We can't assume that Congress will continue to do nothing about the bracket creep of the AMT (although they haven't done much for over 30 years). If we did so, eventually everybody would be paying the AMT. So we compromise, we assume that the AMT will continue as is for 4 years and then start indexing the AMT bracket data from then on. Should Congress actually get around to fixing the AMT then we will start indexing the AMT brackets starting 4 years after Congress acts.
This is the same treatment as we give state tax brackets.
FWIW, we update ESPlanner whenever (if ever) Congress changes the AMT data just as we do for all other state and federal tax data.
