ESPlannerPlus Won't start
I recently migrated to a Mac. I installed a copy of ESPlanner Plus on a separate XP machine which I access from the Mac using LogMeIn.
There is no problem with installation but when I try to start the application by double clicking on the desktop shortcut I get no response. If I try to start it twice in a row quickly it says that ESP is running but I can never see the application in Task Manager. I've checked (and tried switching) database locations, uninstalled and reinstalled a few times but nothing seems to work.
Any ideas?

I've never tried that particular combination of hardware/software so I'm dry. I assume that if you're actually at you XP desktop everything works? If not, then there is some kind of configuration issue with XP I would think.

I am having the exact same problem with an XP machine. A previous version of ESP installed fine on the very same computer. However, support is telling me it must be my computer because hundreds of people have installed successfully.
Dreamhaven,
This is not the problem you are reporting. Read it again
Joe,
This is probably a "DLL Hell" conflict. I have not seen it in quite some time now. ESPlanner is trying to load the UI and is getting blocked or it fails but you see no error. Not sure what to recommend except re-installing XP or moving up to Windows 7. Starting with Vista, this kind of problem has mostly gone away
There is a tool that you can get for free to help you resolve these sorts of things. I have a copy of it somewhere but a quick look at Google turned up this Micro$loth article:
http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/magazine/cc301686.aspx
which might be of some help.

Thanks for all the comments.
Here's a bit more info:
This is a second copy of ESP i downloaded to run on a second XP machine. it runs fine on the first machine.
I encounter the same problem whether using LogMein or connecting directly with the desktop.
It does sound like the DLL problem - When I try to start ESP I can watch the process open in Task Manager. It shows ESP briefly running then it disappears.
I will research the last suggestion by Dick.
I'm having the same problem described by joe.demartino and dreamhaven. I installed the latest upgrade, and esplanner won't start. I'm running XP via VMware Fusion on an Intel Mac. I'm comfortable with Unix and Mac OS, but I only use Windows for ESPlanner. In other words, I have no idea what a .dll file is! Are you saying I have to purchase Windows 7 just so I can run the latest ESPlanner upgrade?
No, you don't need Windows 7 for ESPlanner. Many people run it just fine on Windows XP or Vista.
I have tested on VMware on the mac. In that sense, it's has nothing at all to do with the emulator.
It's very difficult to reproduce the problem. It's quite likely a DLL conflict and impossible to guess the solution. Not sure what to recommend except to remove unused software and run all Windows Updates.
Well, I've tried several things and still no luck getting it to work.
I'm not super technical but I did dabble with some of the debug stuff Dick suggested with no luck and eventually gave up on it.
The last thing left is to try reinstalling XP. It seems drastic as everything else is working fine but I'm not going to buy Windows 7 so am going to consider it.
I've had ESP for several years and used it w/o problems so this is puzzling. Hate to give it up but will have to if I can't make it work.
I just had same problem. Two weeks ago, I had commercial computer service upgrade me to Windows 7--removed all programs, data bases, and did hardware analysis for any problems, so I could get a clean upgrade. They loaded on Windows 7, and I have been slowly adding back my programs they had removed. Everything has been working fine--Quicken, ITunes, Adobe, etc, etc, until I came to ESP. It won't install. Have tried several times, and keep getting a message that if the program didn't install properly, may need to reconfigure something to overcome compatiblilty problems--I gave it the ok to reconfigure and it still won't install. the last time I tried I got a message that "this url is not appropriate for download--contact the site adminstrator."?
Rick
This is a different problem (in fact, everyone is describing something different). "Won't install" means different things to different people.
Please open a support ticket (http://www.esplanner.com/support)
Let us know what you tried and what the messages you saw were.
The message "this url is not appropriate for download--contact the site adminstrator" is probably temporary. Try again later
If you are seeing an entry on the task bar, it may be that ESPlanner is moved off the screen somehow. You can try this:
Open the registry by typing REGEDIT on the START menu
Find the key HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\VB and VBA Program Settings\ESPlannerPlus\Options
Look for MDItop and MDILeft
Change the values to 0 (double click the key name)
Where it says "Value Data" enter 0. Press OK
(If those values are already 0 then that wasn't the problem).
Try ESPlanner again
Lowell,
This didn't seem like my problem as Task Manager is showing that ESPlanner is not starting (pops up briefly in TM then disappears) but I thought I would check the registry. What i found is that there are only two entries in the Options folder - Default and AssetsDirectory. No MDItop or MDIleft or "Value Data". Not sure what this means.
Joe
ESPlanner Version 2.19.70 has resolved the problem.
